CHAPEL HILL – Offensive guard Jared Cohen has left North Carolina’s football program again and is not expected to return.
UNC coach Larry Fedora confirmed Monday that Cohen is no longer with the program.
“Jared Cohen is no longer with the program…,” Fedora said during his weekly press conference at the Kenan Football Center.
Cohen was on the team in 2014 as a true freshman and started two games, losses at East Carolina and Clemson, games the Tar Heels combined to score 76 points. But he left the following summer and missed the last two years.
He returned to the program over the summer but as a walk on. Cohen was having a solid camp, having jumped a few players that began the month ahead of him on the depth chart, and even last Monday he was working with the first team as the right guard.
But, he wasn’t at Thursday’s practice and by Friday he was no longer with the program.
“I hate it for the kid,” Fedora said. “I hope he gets his personal issues worked out and I wish him the best for just the real world, because that’s what he’s going to be doing.”
As for Tommy Hatton, also an offensive guard who was away from the program last season and is again right now, he’s still in the mix, though he’s not listed on the depth chart and isn’t expected to be available this weekend when the Tar Heels host California.
“Tommy is still with us and battling to get back out there,” Fedora said.
