As far as family legacies go in North Carolina athletics, Meredith Keller is part of one that's pretty impressive.
The senior midfielder from Greenville, Del., is the third Keller to play field hockey for North Carolina, with her sisters Abbi (age 27) and Pembry (age 24) each winning national titles with the Tar Heels.
Meredith might not have a title, but she's certainly no slouch. A member of the 2002 U.S. Under-23 Team, she has been all over the world during her stints with the national squad.
As a freshman in 1999, she started 22 games in the midfield on the way to becoming North Carolina's third ACC Rookie of the Year, and she has started every game of her career since.
Keller had 15 points through 16 games this season, including five goals. She also has the important task of performing the stick stop on corners, which is key to the Tar Heels' offense. Keller, who describes herself as "collected" on the field, took some time out of the home stretch recently to answer this edition of the Blue Q:
It says in your bio that you like to break dance. Is that true or just a joke?
I try to with my friends. It's kind of a joke. Those things (bios) are so repetitive, and it's my fourth year, so you just do what you can to have fun with it. Steph (Fuller) and Amy (Tran) and I, some of the older players, try to think of funny stuff to put in there to throw people off.
But you said you try. When does this go on?
I don't know if you remember Katie McDonald, who used to play here, we had a huge joke about it because of the movies "Breakin'" and "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo." They're great movies. They're just awful - so cheesy and poorly done. We just had a lot of fun with them, so we'd break dance and mess around. It's kind of just a joke. I'm not good or anything.
It also says your favorite pregame meal is sugary cereal. Do you have a favorite?
I just love sugar cereal. Anything from Apple Jacks or Lucky Charms to - just anything that's going to get me pepped up before the game.
But is there one favorite?
My favorite is Lucky Charms, definitely. - Or Captain Crunch. Top two.
We can settle this. If you had to choose one cereal for the rest of your life - marshmallows or no marshmallows - which way would you go?
Marshmallows, definitely. I save them all for last. I pick out the Cheerio-like oat parts and eat the marshmallows last.
I actually do the same thing. I'm not sure why people always do that.
It's because it's so good. Your last five bites are great.
Your bio also says you like to go hit golf balls. Are you any good at golf?
Steph Fuller and I have no form whatsoever. We kind of take big Happy Gilmore running starts and swing at them and just go for distance. We don't play golf, we just hit balls. And I'm basically about to pee my pants every time I leave because we're so bad. And everyone looks at us like we're fools, but I enjoy it.
So you've never actually played golf?
Oh, I've tried it, but I'm not very good, so I've accepted that fact. I stick to the driving range.
You've been quite a few places because of field hockey. What was the most interesting?
The most different place probably was Korea. Just because the culture was so different. First of all, I'm walking around and I'm taller than everyone because everyone is so small. We were in a huge city. Seoul is just a huge city. It's way bigger than anything I've ever been to, and it was just incredible to experience the different culture. But my favorite trip was definitely South Africa this summer.
What made that your favorite?
We got to go on a safari - all the animals out in the wild, in their natural habitats - and that's much cooler than seeing them caged up in a zoo. That's definitely why.
So if you were an animal, what would you be?
Oh, man. Probably a lion because nobody messes with those.
Changing the subject, how is it that you and both of your older sisters all ended up coming to Carolina to play field hockey?
(UNC coach) Karen (Shelton) recruited Abbi, and obviously she knew the family and knew there were two younger sisters, so it didn't hurt her to take a look. But actually, I didn't want to come here because of that fact. Not because of Karen and not because of the school, because my sisters went here. But I took an official visit, and it's such a great school and great field hockey program I couldn't avoid it. I just fell in love with it.
Where else were you looking?
I looked at Maryland and UVa. for field hockey. I loved Maryland, but it's too close to home, and UVa., there was just something about it that didn't sit right with me.
Is there any pressure following your two sisters here?
Not really, just because my sisters are so supportive with everything. Everyone says, "Well, Abbi and Pembry won national championships and you haven't, and do they tease you about that?" But they don't. They're so supportive, and they're coming to ACCs this year. But I don't feel any pressure from them; they're really good about that.
You've started every game since coming to school here. Could you even imagine what it would be like to come off the bench?
Just because I've started every game doesn't mean I've played every minute, so I have been on the bench before. I'm not trying to downplay the whole situation. It's great, and I'm glad it happened that way. But a lot of it is that people don't realize that there are people who come in and don't start who are just as good, if not better, than me. It depends on the positions that are open at that point in time. When I came in as a freshman, they were lacking in midfielders, so I was like, all right, great, I can step right in. I really didn't think about the fact that I started every game until this year (assistant coach) Jana (Withrow) said something. I hurt my leg pretty bad before the Radford game, and she said, "We'll start you because we don't want to ruin the streak." And I'm like, "What are you talking about?" I didn't really think about it, but it's pretty cool. It sounds cool.
