TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 11 Florida State hit three home runs, and sophomore right-hander Bryan Henry did not allow an earned run over seven innings to lead the Seminoles (44-14, 16-9 ACC) to a 9-4 win over No. 8 North Carolina Friday at Dick Howser Stadium. The Tar Heels (37-12-1, 15-7-1 ACC) have now lost four of their last six games, including three of their last four in ACC play.
The Seminoles broke open a tie game in the sixth thanks to home runs by second baseman Tony Thomas, Jr. and third baseman Ryne Malone, who has four homers versus Carolina over the last two seasons. Malone was 3-for-3 on the night and reached base five times, and first baseman Danny Wardell went 4-for-4. Center fielder Shane Robinson went 2-for-2 and also walked three times. Josh Spivey put the game away with a two-run homer in the eighth for FSU.

Henry (7-2) gave up two unearned runs and scattered five hits and three walks to earn his fifth straight win. Four Seminole relievers closed out the victory.
Carolina starter Andrew Miller (8-2) went 5.1 innings, allowed a career-high 12 hits and gave up two homers in a game for the first time this season. He allowed six runs, five of which were earned, issued four walks and hit two batters. Miller fanned four and now has 87 strikeouts on the season. The three home runs allowed by Carolina equaled a season high.
Freshman shortstop Josh Horton went 2-for-5 with an RBI single to lead the Tar Heels at the plate. He has hit safely in eight of the last nine games. Freshman first baseman Chad Flack hit his 13th home run of the season - and fourth in the last four games - off Lynch in the eighth. Flack, who also drove in a run in the ninth and now has 43 RBI on the season, is now tied with classmate Seth Williams for the most homers ever by a UNC freshman.
Right fielder Jay Cox gave Carolina an early lead with a run-scoring bunt single in the first. Horton singled up the middle to start the rally, took second on a Seminole fielding error and moved to third on a Flack fly out. Cox then dropped a bunt down the third base line to score Horton for a 1-0 Carolina lead. Cox's single extended his career-best hitting streak to 10 games and drove in his 30th run of the season.
After Miller fanned Thomas to leave the bases full of Seminoles in the second, Florida State put up two in the third to take its first lead of the night. Robinson and Malone led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and a Greg Mangum fielding error allowed Robinson to score from second and tie the game. FSU catcher Aaron Cheesman followed with a sacrifice bunt to drive in Malone from third for a 2-1 Seminole lead. Miller struck out designated hitter Brant Peacher to leave runners at the corners and prevent any further damage.
A second error by FSU shortstop Ryne Jernigan led to the Tar Heels' second run in the fifth. Catcher Justin Webb singled up the middle on the first pitch of the inning by Henry and took third when Jernigan booted a grounder off the bat of Mangum. Horton followed with a single up the middle to drive in Webb and knot the score at two.
The Seminoles reclaimed the lead and chased Miller from the game in the sixth thanks to the two home runs. Thomas broke the 2-2 tie with a solo shot off the top of the 30-foot fence in right field, and after Robinson drew his second walk of the night, Malone roped a two-run shot over the same wall in right to push the lead to 5-2. Following a double to right by left fielder Gibbs Chapman, Miller was lifted in favor of freshman right Andrew Carignan. Chapman later came around to score on an RBI groundout by Cheesman to give the Noles a 6-2 lead.
FSU added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Carolina reliever Matt Spencer issued a bases-loaded walk to Chapman, but Flack got the run back for the Tar Heels in the top of the eighth with his solo homer to left, the first allowed by Lynch this season.
Following Spivey's two-run homer off Tyler Trice, the Tar Heels added one final run in the ninth. Bryan Steed led off the inning with a single, took third on a Matt Ellington double, and then scored as Flack reached on an error.
The series continues at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Sophomore right-hander Robert Woodard will start for the Tar Heels Saturday. The game will be televised in North Carolina on Fox Sports Net South.
