The Tar Heels play only 3 home games at Kenan Stadium going into November for just the 9th time dating back to 1970, spanning 47 seasons.

All but one of the previous years it happened the Heels played 11-game schedules, and in most cases the season didn’t begin until the middle of September.

Here is a list of the seasons since 1970 in which the Tar Heels have played only 3 home games entering November:

1972 – September vs Richmond and NC State and October vs. Kentucky.

1974 – Sept. (opener the 14th) vs. Ohio U., Oct. vs Pittsburgh and NC State.

1984 – Sept (15th opener) vs. Navy and Kansas, Oct. vs. NC State.

1986 – Sept. vs. The Citadel, Oct. vs Georgia Tech and NC State.

(Note: The Heels’ had nonconference road games before November at Kansas, Florida State and LSU)

1991 – Sept (14th opener) vs. Cincinnati, Oct. vs. William & Mary and Wake Forest.

1996 – Aug. vs. Clemson, Sept. vs. Georgia Tech, Oct. vs. Maryland.

2001 – Sept. FSU, Oct. East Carolina and Virginia.

(Note: This is the only prior 12-game schedule, and while the Heels opened with three road games at Oklahoma, Texas and Maryland, the first home game originally scheduled home game versus SMU was moved to December because of the 9/11 tragedy. So, four home games were originally scheduled for prior to November.)

2005 – Sept. vs. Wisconsin, Oct. vs. Utah and Virginia.
