Multiple sources throughout the day on Thursday confirmed to TarHeelIllustrated.com that North Carolina will hire former Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator John Shoop as the program's new offensive coordinator.

The 36-year old Shoop has a decade of coaching experience in the National Football League, starting in 1995 as a Quality Control Assistant with the expansion Carolina Panthers.
Shoop ascended to quarterback's coach of the Panthers in 1997, and he has spent a total of six seasons as quarterbacks coach for four different NFL franchises (Carolina, Chicago, Tampa Bay, and Oakland).
Shoop left Carolina to become quarterbacks coach of the Bears in 1999, a position he held until the 2001 season, when he was promoted to offensive coordinator. The Bears posted a 13-3 record that season, claiming the NFC Central Division title and a playoff berth.
After losing his job with the Bears after the 2003 season, Shoop spent one season in Tampa Bay (2004) and one season in Oakland (2005) as quarterbacks coach, before requesting to be moved to tight ends coach for the 2006 season.
Shoop, who is regarded as a conservative playcaller with an energetic personality, is a popular coach with his players, and received ringing endorsements from Oakland.
Raiders owner Al Davis thought highly enough of Shoop to consider him for the franchise's currently vacant head coaching job.
In addition to his responsibilities as offensive coordinator, it is expected that Shoop will also serve as North Carolina's quarterbacks coach.
A native of Pittsburgh, Shoop was a four-year letterwinner at quarterback for the University of the South.
