First things first, I'm very happy to have been wrong with my prediction on our staff pix column this week, concerning the outcome of the Georgia Tech game on Saturday. I really felt like this was a dangerous game because, let's face it, the Yellow Jackets are not an easy team to play because of the triple option and Carolina has not always handled it well. I apologize to our subscribers, but you know me, I usually don't sugarcoat things, I speak my mind and that's why many of you like the According To Bruce column. I take very serious the opportunity I have to be the "voice" of the fan on this site and as stated many times before, Andrew Jones, our Publisher, makes it possible!
Carolina proved to me and the fans in attendance on Saturday starting off slow against the Jackets was not gonna happen on that day. Carolina hit ‘em in the mouth early and often and didn't wait around for Georgia Tech to get its collective groove on, so to speak! With Ryan Switzer held in check most of the game because of constant double teams, Bug Howard stepped up and had a monster game with 6 catches for 120 yards and a score. Elijah Hood looked like the pre-season 1st-team ACC Running Back I thought he would be, rushing for 168 yards on "just" 12 carries and 3 touchdowns!. It still blows my mind how you can have a stud like Elijah Hood in the backfield and only rush him 12 times.
Look, I understand we have maybe the best Quarterback in Carolina history and in the country right now in Mitch Trubisky and using his skill set is not a bad thing. Young men like Elijah Hood just don't come along often. The combination of speed, power and overall athletic ability, not to mention he's one of the brightest young men on this team, make him a weapon that in my estimation, must be used more than he's been.
Now having said that, I'm not a football coach, never professed to being one. So I have to have faith in our head coach Larry Fedora and I do. But as fans, we question things we see each Saturday and that's what drives our passion for college athletics, I know it does mine. I just don't understand why we can't get more out of a weapon like Elijah. After talking to him after games, I know for a fact it wouldn't bother him one little bit to get more carries. But being the team player he is, he supports the game plan that the coaches put to the players each week. I know I'm gonna miss this young man when he leaves Chapel Hill!
Having brought up Coach Fedora, lets be honest, the Tar Heel Administration needs to get out their check book and make sure he is a Tar Heel for Life, NOW, DO NOT WAIT!!!!!! LSU, Texas and other big-time Power 5 schools will probably be looking for coaches and nobody is a hotter in America right now than Coach Fedora. After what Butch Davis and his group did to our school, leaving the football program in shambles, Coach Fedora and his staff have turned this program around to the point that we could possibly win double digit games two years in a row.
Look at the history books, it hasn't happened very often at Carolina. He and the staff do things the right way on and off the field. I personally am enjoying what I'm seeing and don't take it for granted, because I understand it could all be taken away by a check with many zero's on it. I firmly believe that Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham is not gonna let Coach Fedora out of here without a fight.
It's Duke week and that means something to Tar Heel Fans everywhere. The football matchup between these two teams may not mean what the basketball matchups do to some fans, however, it is Duke and we want to whip them each and every time we have the opportunity regardless of the sport! I am not trying to dismiss the meaning of this game, but let's face it, Duke is not on our level in football and hasn't been for most of my lifetime (57 years).
However, going into Wallace Wade and beating them is still fun to do and I fully expect thousands of Tar Heels Fans in attendance. I know I can't wait to see Mitch and the guys shred the Devils on Thursday! Hey Coach Cut, you have no shot this week and you and your players know it. You can bring in Peyton Manning, Eli Manning or maybe even Archie Manning and have them on the sideline. It's not gonna do you any good. Sorry about being so blunt, but it's who I am.
One of the things I love the most about the opportunity I have to cover games for THI is meeting or just seeing former Carolina players in person on the sidelines! Even though I'm working on the sidelines, I still get goose bumps seeing players I idolized as a child or as a young adult. Because it was Homecoming on Saturday against Georgia Tech, the sidelines were packed with former Carolina football stars who came home to see their beloved Tar Heels.
For starters, former Tar Heel Great William Fuller was recognized on the field at the start of the 2nd quarter, as one of the newest members of the College Football Hall of Fame. Along with William, two other College Football Hall of Famers were also attending the Tech game, as former Tar Heel Greats Dre Bly and Don McCauley roamed the Tar Heel sidelines. Also in attendance was my 2nd all-time (behind Famous Amos Lawrence) running back at UNC in Kelvin Bryant, who was named as one of the Top 50 ACC football Players of all-time in 2002. Each time I run into Kelvin on the field, I am immediately taken back to the day he scored six touchdowns against ECU. There are a lot of you reading this that know what I'm talking about. GO HEELS!
