CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina junior forward Luke Maye (Huntersville, N.C.) is the 2018 recipient of the Skip Prosser Award as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top scholar-athlete in men’s basketball.

The Prosser Award is named in memory of Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser, who passed away on July 26, 2007.

Clemson’s Cliff Hammonds (2008), Miami’s Jack McClinton (2009), Virginia’s Jerome Meyinsse (2010), North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller (2011 and 2012), Duke’s Mason Plumlee (2013), Pitt’s Cameron Wright (2014), North Carolina’s Marcus Paige (2015 and 2016) and Miami’s Davon Reed (2017) are past recipients.

To be nominated for the Skip Prosser Award, a student-athlete must be an upperclassman with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better – both in his career and in the previous two semesters. Sixty percent of the award is based on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishments.

Maye has a 3.45 grade point average and was admitted to the undergraduate program in business administration at the nationally-renowned Kenan Flagler Business School. He has made the Academic All-ACC team in each of his three seasons and is the only ACC player to earn Academic All-District honors in 2018.

Maye is averaging 17.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He is a candidate for the Wooden Award for National Player of the Year, the Karl Malone Award as the top power forward in the country, and All-ACC and Player of the Year honors.

He was the 2017 NCAA South Regional Most Outstanding Player after scoring 17 points and hitting the game-winning shot against Kentucky to advance to the Final Four, where the Tar Heels won the national championship.

This season, Maye has 15 double-doubles, has scored 20 or more points 12 times, and has three games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds. Maye is one of two players in the ACC in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. He has established career scoring highs four different times, including 33 points at NC State on Feb. 10th.

“Luke is an exceptional student and basketball player, and an outstanding choice for the Prosser Award,” says Carolina head coach Roy Williams. “He is the third Tar Heel to win the award, which is a tremendous honor for our university and basketball program.

“Like Tyler (Zeller) and Marcus (Paige), Luke takes as much pride in his academic achievement as he does his basketball accomplishments, and he has much to proud of in both areas. In the classroom and on the court, Luke gets the most of his abilities by working hard, being responsible and never settling for being average. I am so pleased for him and his family, because I know how much value they have placed on his education.”
