Jameis Winston is the reigning Heisman trophy winner, a national champion, almost certainly a first round draft pick and has near miraculously navigated FSU to another undefeated season (so far, anyway). Amazingly - he's all those things without being the ACC's top quarterback in 2014. Marquise Williams spent the spring and fall fighting for his starting job, had to share reps through the first third or so of the season and since then has almost singlehandedly powered UNC into bowl eligibility, along the way becoming the top QB in the conference. Ask me who'll become a better NFL quarterback or which one leads a better team and my answer changes, but the 2014 ACC Player of the Year is Marquise Williams.

North Carolina junior quarterback Marquise Williams was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week for the second straight week and fourth time this season after leading the Tar Heels' 45-20 win at No. 25 Duke. UNC junior Landon Turner was recognized as the Offensive Lineman of the Week, while freshman Nazair Jones earned Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.
With the NC State-UNC rivalry matchup just days away, Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren joined The David Glenn Show on Monday to talk about Saturday's game. Doeren and his players weren't happy with the way the Tar Heels celebrated after winning in Carter-Finley Stadium last season, and the coach says his team is using that experience as motivation for this year's contest.
Last year it was North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron providing the trash talk leading into UNC's contest against NC State, and with this season's game coming up on Saturday, Wolfpack safety Hakim Jones became the first to add fuel to the fire. When asked about UNC's Marquise Williams during a Monday press conference, Jones questioned the quarterback's toughness.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham and head football coach Larry Fedora have officially apologized to Duke University after the Tar Heel football team did at least $10,000 worth of damage to Duke's visiting locker room after Thursday night's football game.
Ahead of Saturday's game in Chapel Hill, NC State safety Hakim Jones took verbal aim at North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams on Monday, saying the Tar Heels star "basically almost quits" after he's hit a few times.
State's players hit both ends of the "Rivalry Week" talking points spectrum on Monday, ranging from incendiary to complimentary. Either way was fine with Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren, who had a memorable quote of his own after last year's 27-19 home loss to North Carolina. "It's a rivalry," Doeren said. Things are going to get said. I'm sure both sides are going to have comments. I'm not really going to worry about that."
This is how North Carolina coach Larry Fedora reacted when I told him about what Hakim Jones, the N.C. State defensive back, had said about Marquise Williams, the Tar Heels' quarterback: "When was that said? Recently?" Yes, Fedora was told. It was said in the past half hour, during N.C. State's weekly media session. Fedora didn't seem to believe it. "OK," he said. "Well Marquise will love hearing that, I guarantee you."
North Carolina took care of one rival last week, and now the Tar Heels turn their attention to another as they host N.C. State on Saturday (12:30 p.m., WRAL) in their regular-season finale. After a resounding 45-20 win over Duke last Thursday night at Wallace Wade Stadium, the Tar Heels expect to be just as fired up to face the Wolfpack.
It's largely flown beneath the radar because North Carolina's defense faltered so badly in the early going, but Tar Heels QB Marquise Williams has emerged as one of the top players in the conference, if not the country.
North Carolina is one of two top-five teams headed to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. There are two more top-25 teams, plus two teams just outside the top 25, in the eight-team field. One of them isn't the Providence Storm. Not the Providence Friars, who already have beaten two ACC clubs this season, but the Storm, an exhibition opponent that pulled a surprising upset of the Tar Heels during their fun-filled visit to the Bahamas in mid-August.
This probably shouldn't be all that surprising. This is Larry Fedora's third year as North Carolina's head coach, and with a game to go in this year's regular-season -- as David Hale of ESPN pointed out -- Fedora has gone 7-11 in the first six games of each season and 14-4 after that. That's a pretty dramatic turnaround, especially considering the last two years, that improves to a combined 3-9 start and 10-2 in the back half.
Now that I'm a junior, I've learned that you have to pace yourself for the grind of an entire season. You don't pace yourself in the games-in those, you go as hard as you can all the time. But everything that falls between the games, from practices to taking care of your body to managing schoolwork, is something that will help you prepare for the end of the year if you do it the right way. You can get worn down very easily if you're not conscious of what you're doing from day to day to maintain your body.
Revelry and rivalry in the Triangle - Greensboro News & Record
Last weekend might have killed any shot at national relevance for North Carolina's college football teams, but it also kicked rivalry shenanigans into high gear. Starting Thursday night in the aftermath of North Carolina's 45-20 defeat of Duke in Durham, things took a turn for the weird and the laughable. Sniping on Monday between UNC and N.C. State added extra flavor to Saturday's game as well.
Breaking down the ACC's bowl scenarios - Greensboro News & Record
There's only one regular-season game left that, in theory, would lead to clarity in the ACC's bowl picture. Theories were good for Einstein and Darwin but not college football and its postseason.
