THI has learned through sources close to the situation that Andrew Platek, a 6-3 shooting guard from Northfield, MA, has committed to play basketball at North Carolina.

Platek, who weighs 190 pounds and attends Mt. Hermon High School, had become a priority of UNC’s in the spring, and as the relationship grew closer he knew Carolina was where he wants to go to school.

Platek has also been offered by Indiana, Miami, Stanford, and Butler, among many others.

THI senior basketball recruiting analyst Clint Jackson spoke at length with Platek a few weeks ago after his visit to Chapel Hill. There was an awful lot about UNC that Platek appreciated and that made an impact on him.

“My biggest takeaways were definitely that basketball is the biggest deal down there,” he said. “Everyone takes it very seriously and that was nice to see. But even greater than that, I think the North Carolina alumni are very connected back to the school and they want the best for the current players.

“They have a great relationship with everyone in and out of UNC basketball. But inside the relationships are just incredible. I think that had the biggest impact on me.”

Platek also cited a conversation he had with some current players that helped him come to this decision.

“I was sitting with Justin Jackson and Kennedy Meeks, as well as Luke Maye, just getting a feel for what they thought of Coach and how they made their decisions,” he said. “It was nice to get different perspectives from a freshman, a rising senior and someone who just participated in the NBA Draft combine. So I made a great relationship with them.

“Justin told me to text him if I had any questions, so he was nice and hospitable to me, which means a lot. I think it shows the character of the players, if they’re willing to sit down and talk to another recruit. It shows a lot about the program.”
