Louisville and 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson will visit Kenan Stadium this weekend to take on the Tar Heels sparking the question: How many other times in North Carolina’s football history has it faced Heisman winners?
The answer: UNC has played 21 games versus teams that had either a reigning or eventual Heisman Trophy winner.
Seven times the Heels played a Heisman Trophy winner the year he won the award. One time, in 1944, Carolina played two eventual Heisman winners in the same game, falling to Doc Blanchard, Glenn Davis and Army.
Blanchard, by the way, originally went to UNC as a freshman before enrolling in the Army and going to West Point.
Eight times an eventual Heisman winner played the Heels at Kenan Stadium, with Notre Dame’s Johnny Lattner in 1953 and Florida State’s Charlie Ward in 1993 playing in Chapel Hill the years they were honored.
UNC’s overall record in games against Heisman Trophy winners is 4-17, and will hope to improve that mark this weekend when Louisville and Jackson visit Kenan Stadium.
Here are those Heisman winners and the game results when they faced the Tar Heels:
*= Played the year that player won the Heisman Trophy
1944 - Doc Blanchard & Glenn Davis
Blanchard won the award in 1945 while Davis won it in 1946 and both played in the 1944 game. Interestingly, Blanchard initially went to UNC because his mother’s cousin was UNC’s coach at the time, Jim Tatum. Blanchard played on the freshman team before transferring to West Point. The Tar Heels fell 42-0 at Army in 1944.
1949 - Leon Hart*
Notre Dame end Leon Hart won the award in 1949, and that season the Fighting Irish clobbered "Choo Choo" Justice and UNC 42-6 at Yankee Stadium.
1951-53 - Johnny Lattner*
UNC took on Notre Dame and star halfback Johnny Lattner three consecutive seasons from 1961-63 falling 12-7, 34-14 and 34-14, respectively. The 1951 and 1953 games were played at Kenan Stadium. Lattner won the award in 1953.
1954-56 - Paul Hornung*
After three straight years of taking on the Irish and 1953 Heisman winner Johnny Lattner, the Heels spent the next three seasons (1954-56) facing the Irish and 1956 Heisman winner Paul Hornung. UNC lost those games 42-13, 12-7 and 21-14, respectively, with the 1955 game played at Kenan Stadium.
1962 - John Huarte
John Huarte saw action in all of Notre Dame’s games in 1962 but not much. Yet, the 1964 Heisman Trophy winner still got on the field against the Tar Heels in a 21-7 home win over UNC.
1974 - Tony Dorsett
In 1974, the Tar Heels welcomed Pittsburgh to Kenan Stadium and eventual Heisman winner Tony Dorsett. The Tar Heels rolled to a 45-29 victory and two years later in 1976 Dorsett win the award.
1975 - Archie Griffin*
Ohio State running back Archie Griffin is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice, earning the honor in 1974 and 1975. The Buckeyes hosted the Tar Heels in 1975, winning 32-7. It is the only time UNC has ever taken on a player who already owned a Heisman Trophy. Saturday versus Lamar Jackson and Louisville will be the second time that’s happened.
1978-79 - George Rogers
UNC played South Carolina and George Rogers twice winning both games, 24-22 in Columbia in 1978 and 28-0 at Kenan in 1979. Rogers won the award in 1980.
1981 & 1984 - Doug Flutie*
In 1981, true freshman Doug Flutie saw some mop up action at quarterback on an afternoon UNC routed Boston College 56-14. Three years later, the 1984 Heisman Trophy winner lit up the Tar Heels in a 52-20 victory that was played at the New England Patriots’ stadium in Foxboro, MA.
1992-93 - Charlie Ward*
Charlie Ward and Florida State took care of the Tar Heels 36-13 in Tallahassee in 1992 and 33-7 at Kenan Stadium the following season, which was the year Ward won the Heisman. Ward, by the way, played 11 seasons in the NBA.
1998-2000 - Chris Weinke*
Former minor league baseball player Chris Weinke went back to college after seven years in the minors, and at ages 26, 27 and 28 he engineered victories over the Tar Heels: 39-13 at FSU in 1998, 42-10 at Kenan in 1999, and 63-14 at FSU in 2000, the year Weinke won the Heisman Trophy.
2001 - Jason White
Okay, Oklahoma quarterback Jason White attempted just 2 passes against the Tar Heels in the 2001 season opener, but he did get on the field against them. The Sooners won that night, 41-27, in Norman, and in 2003 White won the Heisman Trophy.
