CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina and head coach Roy Williams released the 2017-18 Tar Heel men's basketball roster on Monday.

The defending NCAA champions return eight lettermen from the team that beat Gonzaga for the national title in April. Those returnees include three players with significant starting experience in senior Theo Pinson, senior Joel Berry II and junior Keenny Williams. Junior power forward Luke Maye and sophomores Brandon Robinson, Seventh Woods and Shea Rush also return, as does senior reserve Aaron Rohlman.

Among the eight newcomers on the team are Cameron Johnson, a graduate transfer from the University of Pittsburgh who will have two years of eligibility at UNC. Johnson, a 6-8 guard from Moon Township, Pa., graduated from Pitt and played two full seasons for the Panthers. He received a medical red-shirt in 2014-15 after playing in eight games as a freshman.

Johnson averaged 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 33 games last year, shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range (78 of 188). He was one of two Panthers to start all 33 games and led Pitt in three-point field goals, three-point percentage, free throw percentage (.811) and steals (31). He scored 583 points in 73 career games for Pitt. Johnson earned Academic All-ACC honors twice, was an academic all-district selection in 2016-17 and graduated with honors.

Also arriving are scholarship freshmen Andrew Platek (Schenectady, N.Y.), Jalek Felton (West Columbia, S.C.), Garrison Brooks (Lafayette, Ala.), Sterling Manley (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Brandon Huffman (Goldsboro, N.C.) and walk-on freshman Walker Miller (Greensboro, N.C.). Miller is the younger brother of former Tar Heel and current UNCG head coach Wes Miller.

Also new to the team is KJ Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), a transfer from the University of the Pacific who will sit out the 2017-18 campaign. Smith is the son of former UNC All-America point guard Kenny Smith.

Among returning players, two players have changed uniform numbers for 2017-18. Woods will wear No. 0 as a sophomore instead of 21, while Robinson will wear No. 4 this season instead of 14.

Newcomer uniform numbers include No. 3 Platek, No. 5 Felton, No. 13 Johnson, No. 15 Brooks, No. 21 Manley, No. 22 Miller (like his older brother, Wes), No. 30 Smith (like his father, Kenny) and No. 42 Huffman.
