ATLANTA – Turnovers, rebounding, and a bungled last play did in North Carolina on Saturday in the CBS Sports Classic.

Kentucky had a healthy hand in it, too, as the Wildcats earned an 87-83 win over the Tar Heels at State Farm Arena.

In some respects, No. 9 Carolina shouldn’t have been that close. It was outrebounded by 10, including 18-6 on the offensive glass. It turned over the ball leading to 19 Kentucky points. And Armando Bacot totaled just nine points on four field goal attempts, and grabbed only six rebounds.

And then there was UNC’s last offensive play, as described below: freshman point guard Elliot Cadeau’s errant pass to Cormac Ryan’s back. It led to the Heels’ final turnover, ending any chance Carolina might send the game into overtime.

UNC trailed 86-83 when it inbounded the ball with 11.9 seconds remaining. Kentucky Coach John Calipari said he told UK freshman guard Reed Sheppard to foul Cadeau as soon as he crossed halfcourt, but Sheppard didn’t. A fortuitous decision there, as Cadeau’s mistake occurred a dribble after crossing midcourt.

RJ Davis led Carolina with 27 points, Ryan scored 20, and Harrison Ingram was the only other UNC player to score in double figures, as he finished with 10. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, and eight UK players went for seven or more points.

UNC dropped to 7-3 on the season, and No. 14 UK improved to 8-2.
