Brown Using Last Year's Experience To His Advantage

CHAPEL HILL – Jordon Brown is the grizzled returning Tar Heel in the running backs room inside the Kenan Football Center.

Yet, he’s just a true sophomore and has a grand total of 20 carries to his college credit. With those rushing attempts, Brown amassed 55 yards and a touchdown, and he also caught one pass for 15 yards.

Joined in the backfield this fall competing for spots in the rotation by Auburn grad transfer Stanton Truitt and true freshmen Michael Carter, who enrolled in January, and Kayne Roberts, Brown is regarded the favorite to be on the field for the first offensive snap versus Cal on Sept. 2.

THI caught up with Brown on Monday to discuss what he learned from last season, how it’s helping him now, and how fall camp is going.

Here is that interview:

On not redshirting and getting some reps last year having value now that he’s the only experienced returning player at his position…

I think those reps were very valuable. Just being able to get out there and being on the field against other teams I feel the little amount of reps that I had helped me a lot to prepare for this year.

On watching film, especially from the UVA and Stanford games…

It helped me learn from my mistakes. I know the small amount of plays I did get in I made some mistakes and I was able to look back on those things, see them and make sure I don’t make the same mistakes this year.

On watching seniors (and now in the NFL) T.J. Logan and Elijah Hood practicing, preparing and otherwise last season…

Those are two great guys, they helped me a lot and showed me how to prepare for games, how to watch film, what to look for, and they really helped as far as protection and my reads and stuff. Along with Khris, too.

On how camp is going so far at mid-point…

I think it’s going good. The offense is starting to come together, we’re starting to make more plays and we’re starting to become more of a cohesive unit even with the quarterbacks switching in and out. I think we’re starting to come together.

On the offense overall at this point in camp…

I think we’re really getting there. We have the talent, it’s just a matter of getting the plays down, getting the reps in practice.
