David Caraher is one of those guys on a basketball court that just does all of the little things. He boxes out. He utilizes leverage. He seals off an angle inside to receive a pass. He makes the smart back screen that frees up another guy for a bucket.

He can also shoot the ball well. He passes alertly. He defends his man and he is a very patient player.

Simply put, the 6-6 WF in the junior class is a jack of all trades. He spoke to Tar Heel Illustrated about how he tries to make an impact in every game.

“I’m getting my teammates involved,” he said. “I’m making sure my teammates are happy, getting everyone involved. Making sure my big men are happy. I’m running the floor. I’m knocking down shots, getting to the rim, doing the little things. Setting ball screens. You have to play as a team.”

The Chapel Hill native is on the radars of a lot of college programs. The former Butler commitment backed out of his verbal pledge that he made as a sophomore. And now he’s receiving interest from a lot of colleges.

“A bunch of the Ivy League Schools – Princeton, Harvard and Yale. All of those schools are recruiting me. North Carolina is still showing interest, along with Providence, Miami of Florida. A lot of new schools have gotten involved since my decommitment from Butler. Air Force has offered me. I know Richmond has been calling. I think they have offered me, because that is what I have been told, but I cannot confirm that.”

The Tar Heels have kept an eye on the savvy forward for nearly a year and they’re telling him that they’ll be watching him this spring and summer on the AAU circuit.

“Just really waiting to see how I do this summer, because I am going to be playing with Team Charlotte and Devon Dotson, so they’ll be out to see me a lot.

His AAU coach, former UNC point guard, Jeff McInnis, will be coaching him. And a lot of the focus for Caraher will be on the other side of the court.

“Really playing defense,” he said of his main focus. “Coach (Jeff) McInnis has really been preaching to be about defense. Being able to play defense at the college level and focusing on things like that."
