There was a stretch more than a hundred years ago when North Carolina quite frequently played football games in the Queen City.
From 1896-1914, UNC played in Charlotte ten times winning four, losing four, and twice battling Davidson to scoreless ties. In all, the Tar Heels have played 25 times in Charlotte, with their 26th meeting slated for December 27, when they take on West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
The game will mark a first in Carolina history, as it’s the only year in which UNC has opened and closed its season playing in Charlotte. The Tar Heels kicked off the 2023 campaign with a 31-17 victory over South Carolina. UNC played twice in Charlotte in 2015, opening the season with a loss to the Gamecocks and falling to Clemson in the ACC Championship game.
Overall, UNC is 12-11-2 in games played in Charlotte, five of which have been bowl games, and two have been ACC title games.

Note: All games beginning in 1998 have been at Bank of America Stadium.
