Raneieria Dillworth, a 3-star linebacker who attends Glenn High School in Kernsersville, NC, has decided to play football at North Carolina, he announced Friday afternoon.

Dillworth has a lot of outstanding offers but narrowed it down to Alabama and UNC.

"I picked the Tar Heels because it felt like home. It is home actually," Dillworth told THI. "I know I can get developed there. I can go in as a freshman and be a priority. My mom and my family are very comfortable with Carolina. With the coaches, I feel most comfortable with coach Longo, coach Thigpen, coach Bateman, and especially coach Brown.

"He's a Hall of Fame coach. He knows a lot about the game and I feel like he can help me to become one of the greats that has ever been through North Carolina. I feel most comfortable at North Carolina because I believe in him and my parents believe in him."

Also among Dillworth’s offers: Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Penn State, Oregon, Florida and Florida State, among many others.

But the reasons he will be a Tar Heels aren’t limited to just a couple of things, with proximity leading the way. Dillworth sees what’s happening in Mack Brown’s program.

"Seeing the other guys committing to North Carolina did make a little bit of an impact on me but I didn't make my decision because of that," he said. "I was going off of how I felt about the situation. I'm really close with everybody in the class and even the players on the team right now. I talk to the recruits every day. It's a strong bond between us."

As for the kind of role the staff envisions for Dillworth, it's a significant one.

"They want me to be a kind of Isaiah Simmons type of player," he said. "In high school I play a little linebacker, safety, and roll down as a nickel."

Dillworth is rated the No. 22 player nationally at his position and the No. 14 overall prospect in the state of North Carolina. He’s the 14th member of UNC’s class of 2021, which is ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Deana's Take

“This was a huge pickup for the Tar Heels. He has a lot of potential and can be superstar in Jay Bateman’s defense. He is fast and a big-time hitter.”
