CHAPEL HILL – UNC football coach Larry Fedora met with the media following his team’s practice Thursday morning, its eighth of fall camp.

The coach discusses Tuesday’s scrimmage, true freshmen that have stood out, Tyler Powell, Jared Cohen, turning the defense loose (he singled out Toman Fox), and much more.

*Fedora said the scrimmage went well, the staff learned a lot about the young players who can answer in film room what they’re supposed to do versus the ones that can implement it on the field.

*He praised the offensive line, said it’s coming along well. Fedora was asked about Jared Cohen, who stated two games as a true freshman in 2014 but was gone from school the last two years before returning this summer as a walk on.

Fedora said Cohen is about 20 pounds lighter than he was in 2014 but has maintained all of the same strength numbers he had before leaving. Fedora said Cohen has picked up where he left off as far as knowing the offense.

*Increasing pressure off the edge is a point of emphasis, and Fedora noted Tomon Fox as someone who is really playing well and also tossed in Malik Carney and Dajaun Drennon.

*Among the freshmen that Fedora singled out are Kayne Roberts, Tre Shaw, Jordon Riley, Malik Robinson, Marcus McKethan and Beau Corrales.

*The sixth-year coach said Tyler Powell is playing well and is getting some work inside as well as outside. With Marlon Dunlap recently leaving the program and Robert Dinkins not coming back in the spring, there’s an opportunity for someone to nab the fourth DT slot. While Powell is primarily getting reps on the edge, his work inside means he likely will see some action there in games.
