North Carolina picked up a verbal commitment from Sandy Creek (GA) 3-star defensive end Nick Fulwider on Thursday evening. He was the 11th overall commit in the Tar Heels’ class of 2018, which added 4-star running back Devon Lawrence on Friday.
Fulwider (6-6, 260 pounds) pledged to the Tar Heels less than a week after his official visit to Chapel Hill.
Aside from UNC, Fulwider had picked up offers from Louisville, Mississippi State, West Virginia and Wisconsin, though he narrowed his final list of schools to Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Indiana and UNC.
Tar Heel Illustrated caught up with Fulwider to discuss his commitment.
Here Is The Interview:
THI: When did you decide to commit to Carolina?
Fulwider: "I had decided before I left NC. I just wanted to pray about everything and start preparing my mom and trainer about the decision."
THI: What were the deciding factors in your ultimate decision?
Fulwider: "Great atmosphere. I just believe that my spiritual and academic needs will be met there. It's funny how God will bring you full circle. I just found out that my cousin Richard Quinn played at UNC.”
THI: You said last week you learned a lot about the academic side of things during your visit, how much did that factor in, as well?
Fulwider: "Well, I will have to be more creative with my major. I wanted to major in mechanical engineering, but UNC doesn't offer it so I will take classes for biomedical engineering and research the applied science, it will all work out.”
THI: Which coach did you tell first about your choice, and what was his reaction?
Fulwider: "Coach Kap, he was really excited about me joining the family."
THI: You've gotten a ton of support online from other UNC commits, how has that been for you?
Fulwider: "Well, I had already been communicating on and off with some of them. They have been supportive of me throughout the process.”
THI: Specifically what commits have you been in contact with, and what have they said about UNC?
Fulwider: "I don't really feel comfortable naming guys without permission, but I will say that they were very open about UNC. They expressed love for the campus and coaches. "
THI: Are you going to enroll early or after spring graduation?
Fulwider: "No sir, coming after spring graduation."
THI: Does UNC have you on any kind of physical preparation plan between now and when you arrive?
Fulwider: "Not yet, but I am planning to train and gain weight during the off-season."
THI: Finally, what kind of football player and person is Carolina getting?
Fulwider: "God fearing, dominating and passionate about the game. I can play inside an out. Coach said that I would probably end up inside as I gain weight and grow, which is fine, I love DT. "
