Class of 2018 athlete Jalen Niixon of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, accepted a walk-on opportunity to play college football next year at North Carolina.

Nixon was ecstatic to make the decision public that he will be a Tar Heel and can’t wait to get things going. Well under the radar for a lot of FBS programs, Nixon explained to THI how this union came about.

"My high school coach went to a coaching clinic and someone from UNC was there," the 6-2, 190 pounder said. "My coach must have went up to them and talked about me, and that's when they became interested in me."

Tar Heel Illustrated caught up with Nixon to discuss the decision to become a Tar Heel.

Here is the interview:

THI: How long have you been in contact with UNC?

Nixon: About a month now.

THI: What coach are you in contact with on the staff?

Nixon: Coach Jason Tudyrn

THI: What other schools have offered you?

Nixon: NC A&T, Catawba, and a bunch of D 3 schools.

THI: As a senior, what were your final stats?

Nixon: I had about 45 catches for 800 yards. I also played some defense and special teams.

THI: What has the staff told you about possible getting a scholarship down the road?

Nixon: They said if I came in, work hard and produce that I could earn a scholarship.

THI: How does it feel knowing you will be a Tar Heel?

Nixon: It feels outstanding, it's been a lifelong dream to be a Tar Heel.
