CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina opened fall camp Wednesday morning at the Koman Practice Complex, the first of 20 for the Tar Heels before they enter game-week mode in advance of the season opener versus South Carolina in September 2 in Charlotte.

The Tar Heels went 17 periods, with a few matching 11-on-11, and a couple of others seven-on-seven. The rest of the time, the Heels did drills in their position groups.

Below is a loose depth chart gleaned from today’s practice. Note that many skill position players bounce around from the Blue team to the White team, as a rotation of player groupings is the norm.

So, here is a loose depth chart based on what we saw today:

Blue Team Offense

QB – Drake Maye; RB – Elijah Green; WR – Tez Walker, Nate McCollum, Kobe Paysour; TE John Copenhaver; OL (L-R) – William Barnes, Ed Montlius, Corey Gaynor, Jonathan Adorno, Spencer Rolland

Whie Team Offense

QB – Conner Harrell; RB – Omarion Hampton; WR – J.J. Jones, Andre Greene, Christian Hamilton; TE – Kamari Morales; OL (L-R) – Diego Pounds, Malik McGowan, Chance Carroll, Zach Rice, Trevyon Green.

Note: Caleb Hood got reps with both at RB; Bryson Nesbit got reps with both at TE; Gavin Blackwell got mixed reps at WR; Willie Lampkin got in some work with both as well.

Blue Team Defense

DL – Des Evans, Myles Murphy, Kevin Hester; LB – Power Echols, Cedric Gray; Jack – Kaimon Rucker; Star – DeAndre Boykins; CB – Marcus Allen, Alijah Huzzie; Safety – Gio Biggers, Don Chapman.

White Team Defense

DL – Kedrick Bingley-Jones, Travis Shaw, Beau Atkinson; LB – Sebastian Cheeks, Amare Campbell; Jack – Amari Gainer; Star – D.J. Jones; CB – Armani Chatman, Tayon Holloway; Safety – Stick Lane, Derrik Allen.

Note: Lejond Covazos got in work with both at CB; Kaleb Cost got solid reps at Star; Ayden Duncanson got work with the 2s at Safety; Jacolbe Cowan was in with the 2s at times; veteran Tomari Fox also got some reps, but not as much when we were watching OvD stuff.

Also: Some third-team units of note that got solid reps: LB with Deuce Caldwell and Caleb LaValee; Tyler Thompson at Jack.

*Sophomore safety Will Hardy is out with a lower body injury, but he is expected to be ready for the opener.

And More (both offense & defense): Jalen Brooks is listed as a linebacker but worked today with the Jacks; After Maye and Harrell, the scholarship QB rotation was Jefferson Boaz third and Tad Hudson fourth; British Brooks went first in some drills at RB, but we didn’t really see him on the field in any of the 7-v-7 or 1-v-11 stuff.

Special Teams Notes

*Ryan Coe is the placekicker and Ben Kiernan is the punter.

*We did watch the punt return group and it was, in order: Nate McCollum; George Pettaway; D.J. Jones; and Grady Sherrill.
