Puff Johnson, a 6-foot-7 small forward from Phoenix, AZ, by way of New Township, PA, has committed to play basketball at North Carolina, he announced Tuesday night.

Johnson, whose older brother, Cameron, starred the last two seasons at UNC and now plays for the Phoenix Suns, took an official visit to Carolina over the weekend with his father. He had been considered a lean to Arizona, which is coached by Sean Miller, who played with Johnson’s father in college at Pittsburgh.

But Johnson’s visit clearly moved the needle for him and he opted to follow in his brother’s highly successful path.

“It is a great atmosphere down there…,” Johnson recently told Rivals. “It is just one big family and they are real close with each other and they know that I am Cam’s brother… They know me and I know them.

“We talk all of the time and a couple of them are really pushing for me to go but it is definitely a great family down there.”

Johnson is a 4star prospect who is rated the No. 43 overall player nationally in the class and the No. 12 player at his position.

He transferred to Hillcrest Academy in Arizona to be closer to his brother and also to play his senior year in high school, as he wasn’t eligible in Pennsylvania because he exceeded a six-year rule that gives athlete six years of eligibility in a sport once they finish sixth grade. Johnson repeated eighth grade, so his six-year period ran out this past spring.

Johnson is the fifth member of UNC’s class of 2020 to commit to Roy Williams’ program.

“What a great piece to add to an already fantastic class. I see Puff as a multi-year player who can shoot, defend and rebound. He’s a sniper from the arc and doesn’t need a lot of time to get his shot off. He’ll help space the floor and open up the court for others.

“As was the story with his brother, Cam, we feel that he can be a very solid offensive weapon.”
