With the 2019-20 sports season now in the books, THI takes a look at the incoming freshmen that comprise North Carolina’s basketball recruiting class.

The five-member class include four McDonald’s All-Americas and another highly rated player. The class is ranked No. 3 in the nation and could add another player later this spring.

So here is a look at how each player did this season, their stats, honors, Clint Jackson’s thoughts and what UNC Coach Roy Williams said about them. We begin with Day'Ron Sharpe.

Day’Ron Sharpe committed to UNC on June 17, 2018, but couldn’t sign his letter of intent to play for the Tar Heels for another 483 days.

Sharpe clearly wanted to be a Tar Heel, and this coming summer he will enroll in the school and once the campus opens back up, he will begin working on a daily basis with teammates. His time is almost here.

A native of Winterville, NC, Sharpe played at South Central before spending this past year at Montverde Academy in Florida. The move gave him more exposure and allowed him to play with and against some of the best players in the nation.

He helped lead Montverde to a 25-0 record and No. 1 national ranking by MaxPreps.

Sharpe’s Senior Stats

Montverde's SID says they don't keep stats but through a couple of sources we have an idea what his stats were. The numbers are at around 12.5 points, 8 rebounds and he shot around 65 percent. His team was loaded and won every game, so he didn't play a ton, as is often the case on clubs like this.

Sharpe’s Senior Honors:

McDonald’s All-American

Jordan Brand Classic

Nike Hoops Summit

2020 Jersey Mike’s Naismith National All-America Team

Honorable Mention NaismithTrophy

MaxPreps 5th-Team All-American

Sharpe on UNC: “It was an easy decision for me. It was always my dream school growing up. And it still is.”

Clint Says...

"Anytime we watched him over the course of the last two years, he just looked terrific. The physical specimen from eastern North Carolina is just a gem of a prospect. He has sensational hands and is a terrific rebounder and half-court passer. And now with a year of Montverde development under Kevin Boyle, he runs like a deer, moves his feet better defensively and has learned some more about the nuances of the game.

"Sharpe is going to be an immediate star in Chapel Hill. Garrison Brooks and Armando Bacot better be ready to battle in practice."

Roy Williams On Sharpe:

"He's one of those kids that you fall in love with as soon as you meet him, and that's what I did when he was a sophomore. He's gotten better and better and better. If you look at his rise in the rankings you'll see that two years ago he wasn't in the top 100 in his class; now he's in the top 20 and he's going to continue to improve.

"His mom and dad have made a big sacrifice to send him to play against tremendously difficult competition at Montverde, and he's stepped up to the task and done a great job. He won a state championship and was the MVP of the 4-A state tournament in North Carolina last year, so he knows how to play well in big games."

Roy On The Class:

“I never, ever, ever get caught up in recruiting rankings… I love these kids and it remains to be seen what they’ll do but I do feel really, really good about it… I just want guys that I like. We lost a couple of guys we would have liked, there’s no question about that, but I feel very comfortable with it, happy with it. Extremely happy because I also think they’re high-quality kids.

"The character that they have, they’re all characters, too. I do enjoy that part of it. Solid kids that all want to be better and all have big-time dreams and goals, individually but also have them as a team as well.”
