Are Four "Super" Conferences Really Inevitable? - ACCSports.com
Four 16-team super conferences. That's the end game isn't it Through all this talk of networks, footprints, exit fees, yadda, yadda, yadda, I keep reading and hearing about the inevitable "four 16-team super conferences." You've got to get to 16 and get in that group of four, the thinking goes, or you're consigned to the dust bin of college sports history.

Somehow, the ACC found a way to come out of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with the first tie in the history of the event. The league picked up four wins on Wednesday night, two of them on the road, and No. 2 Duke brought the conference all the way back with its marquee win over No. 4 Ohio State.

ACC title game sales drop - Charlotte Observer
After consecutive sellouts in the first two ACC football championship games played at Bank of America Stadium, a less-than-capacity crowd is expected Saturday night when Florida State meets Georgia Tech with a spot in the Orange Bowl at stake. Will Webb, executive director of Charlotte Collegiate Football, which operates the game, said approximately 59,000 tickets have been sold for the 8 p.m. ACC championship game. That number includes the 10,000 tickets for which each of the competing schools is responsible.

Room occupancy and game attendance may be lower for this year's ACC football championship game Saturday night in Charlotte, but the city's hotel and restaurant managers seem to agree on one thing - a so-so ACC title game is better than no ACC title game.
Former East Chapel Hill High teammates anchor UNC defense - Durham Herald-Sun
Sophomore Caitlin Ball wasn't planning on playing soccer when she enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Freshman Hanna Gardner was recruited to UNC, but the coaching staff thought she was still a year or two away from playing. Now, as the most successful program in women's soccer history attempts to win its 21st NCAA championship at this weekend's College Cup, the former East Chapel Hill High teammates will comprise two-thirds of the Tar Heels' defense.
ACC/Big Ten: It was a tie but ACC won - ESPN.com
So the final result of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge was a 6-6 tie, the first in the event's 14-year history (the ACC leads 10-3-1). That means the Big Ten will retain its title. Overall, however, I think the ACC won. It was hard to deny the Big Ten's standing as the nation's strongest conference entering the 2012-13 season. But that's less certain after this outcome. I think the league's top tier can compete with any league's best. The Big Ten hype, however, has been based, in part, on its apparent depth. With Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin all losing, it might not be the top-to-bottom juggernaut it appeared to be a few weeks ago. And credit the ACC for exceeding most expectations.

Stapleton: Hakeem Nicks' dad helps fuel Giants WR - North Jersey Record
Man-to-man challenges on the football field are nothing new to Hakeem Nicks. In fact, they've always brought out his best. But this one happened to take place in his suburban Charlotte, N.C., home, although the Giants can only hope the heartfelt conversation between Nicks and his father during the team's bye week ultimately produces similar results between the lines.

16 things that cost more than a ticket to the ACC Championship - USA Today
Tickets to Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference Championship between Florida State and Georgia Tech are selling for as low as $4 on StubHub. It's almost as if people aren't interested in making the eight-hour drive from Tallahassee to Charlotte to sit outside in December and watch the Seminoles play the 6-6 Yellow Jackets.
