What Storm? Business As Usual For Fedora & Heels

CHAPEL HILL – UNC football coach Larry Fedora said Wednesday evening that he’s not really following the weather and Hurricane Matthew, but he has heard about it from his wife.

It’s no secret the coach and his staff are pretty well insulated during the season, working 16-18 hour days, so that he’s not on top of the storm threatening this weekend’s game between the No. 17 Tar Heels and No. 25 Virginia Tech isn’t a surprise.

“I know that it’s out there, my wife’s told me, there’s a lot of people talking about it,” Fedora said. “But for us, we’ve still got to prepare one way or the other, so we’re just trying to get this team ready to play a real good football team. I hadn’t thought twice about it.”

On Tuesday, UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham put out a release noting the school and ACC had been in talks earlier in the day and are monitoring the situation. Cunningham didn’t specifically note what the options are regarding the game, but there are alternatives that have been and will be discussed Thursday when they discuss the issue again and render a decision.

Has Cunningham asked Fedora for his input on the options?

“He hasn’t told me the alternatives,” the coach said. “We want to play so I don’t know what the alternatives are, but I’m sure Bubba will talk to me when it comes up.”

One option is to move the game, but that’s option that doesn’t interest Fedora at all.

“No, I wouldn’t be for that, no,” he said, with a slight smile. “I wouldn’t be for that at all.”

With storm projections having changed since early Wednesday morning, it appears more likely Chapel Hill may escape what was originally forecasted and the game Saturday versus the Hokies may take place as scheduled at 3:30 at Kenan Stadium. That said, lots of rain and maybe even a great deal of wind could be factors.

Fedora has said in the past that rain doesn’t affect what his team does, but wind can be an issue.

“For special teams it’s big, but if it’s enough wind it affects the throwing game, also,” he said. ‘But we try to train no matter what so our guys won’t think about it and won’t worry about it. But for me, there’s a lot of decisions that have to be made, and a lot of it has to do with the kicking game.”

The ACC is expected to make an announcement sometime Thursday, likely by noon.
