No recruit in the 2022 class has been watched more closely by Tar Heel fans during the late summer than Cam Whitmore.

The nation's 22nd ranked player out of Baltimore has been a top priority ever since Hubert Davis offered him in June. It has been widely speculated over the past few weeks that UNC was in the top tier of suitors. A source with knowledge of the recruitment told Tar Heel Illustrated over the weekend that the three leaders were Illinois, North Carolina, and Villanova in alphabetical order.

That source proved to be prophetic. Whitmore announced this three finalist Monday evening, and as predicted the Fighting Illini, Tar Heels, and Wildcats were the three programs left standing.
